Fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria kills 48

 


48 people have tragically died after a fuel truck exploded in the West African country of Nigeria. The accident took place in Niger state in the north-central part of the country on Sunday (September 8). News, The Guardian.

According to the report, when a truck collided with the exploded fuel tanker, it exploded like a bomb. The state's emergency management agency said the fuel truck collided with another truck carrying livestock and people. Several nearby cars caught fire after the blast.

Emergency Management Agency spokesman Husseini Ibrahim said 48 people died in the accident. However, he said that work was still going on to assess the situation at the accident site.

Abdullahi Baba-Arab, director general of the State Emergency Management Agency, said 30 bodies had been recovered early. Later, in another statement, he informed about the recovery of 18 more burnt bodies. He said that they were given a mass burial.

It should be noted that tanker accidents are not new in Nigeria. According to the country's Federal Road Safety Corps, there were 1531 petrol tanker accidents in 2020 alone.
