The floodgates of the dam have been opened up to 3 feet as the water of Kaptai Lake has reached the limit and the bank areas have been inundated. Karnaphuli Water Power Plant manager ATM Abduzzah confirmed the matter on Monday (September 2) afternoon.
He said, increasing the water flow in Kaptai Lake, 16 gates have been opened by 3 feet since yesterday. In this, 59 thousand cusecs of water is being released into the Karnaphuli river every second.
At present the water level in the lake is 108 feet above sea level. The capacity of the lake is 109 feet. Kaptai dam started without water from last 27th August.
It is to be noted that as a result of 220 megawatt power generation in five units of Karnaphuli water power plant, 32,000 to 33,000 cusecs of water is separated and released into Karnaphuli river every second. Now about 92 to 93 thousand cusecs of water is being released in Karnaphuli river every second. The final destination of this water from the Kaptai Lake in the Karnaphuli Basin is the Bay of Bengal.
